No Pediatric Toxicologist at Gurjaani Multi-Profile Medical Center “GeoHospotals”

June 11, 2015

Lela Khechoshvili, Kakheti

A snake bit 12-year-old child in Vazisubani village in Gurjaani municipality. According to the family members, they took the child with swellings to the multi-profile medical centre “Geohospitals” in Gurjaani. The child spent half day there, but medical personnel did only transfusion.

The child bitten by snake was transferred from Gurjaani’s multi-profile medical center “Geohospitals” to Tbilisi. The reason was absence of pediatric toxicologist in Gurjaani.  According to the family members, doctors could not identify which snake had bitten the child.

Humanrights.ge contacted Lia Gogishvili, the toxicologist of Geohospitals. According to her, she has a license, but is called to the clinic only if adults apply. There is no pediatric toxicologist in the multi-profile medical center.

According to locals of village Vazisubani, the reptile has bitten the child when he/she was playing. As they say there are many reptiles in the village and with the rising temperature, they are becoming more aggressive.

As the governor of Gurjaani municipality told to humanrights.ge, they are planning to poison specific areas in order to prevent expected threats.
