Quarantine will be announced in Kardenakhi Because of the Spread of Anthrax

July 14, 2015
Lela Khechoshvili, Kakheti

Quarantine will be announced in the village Kardenakhi of Gurjaani municipality, because the anthrax was discovered in beef.

Beef infected 10 people in Kardenakhi. According to locals, the infected people had rash on their skin.

As the head of regional department of the National Food Agency Zurab Vepkhishvili told to humanrights.ge, a sample of meat was sent to two laboratories and the anthrax, Siberian Plague, was confirmed.
“We sent the sample of the meat to two laboratories and both of them confirmed the anthrax. We think that the infected people will have the same,”- said Zurab Vepkhishvili.

According to the public health epidemiologist of Gurjaani, Lali Batsanidze , Siberian Plague has been discovered in people too, but majority of them have a simple, cutaneous (skin) form of the disease, they do not have it in their blood. Condition of three persons is still doubtful, because it is not confirmed yet, whether they are infected or not.

“If they have the anthrax, they will stay and continue a treatment in the AIDS Center. Others have a skin form of anthrax, which was not transferred to blood,”_said the epidemiologist.

The National Food Agency and Health Care Service were examining the reasons that caused the disease on the site.

According to Zurab Vepkhishvili, the National Food Agency will provide a free vaccination for the animals in the place of disease. The Ministry of Health Care has to provide appropriate help for the locals.

“Sheep and goats and cattle will be vaccinated in the village. The place where it was butchered will be disinfected and conserved. We cannot tell the causes of the disease, because it has not been confirmed yet. We will inform the province to announce quarantine in the village until the danger is gone,”- said Vepkhishvili.

As humanrights.ge was informed, the personnel of the National Food Agency have started the process of vaccination against the anthrax in Kardenakhi.

“A group of veterinaries enter the village on July 10. We have already vaccinated more than 400 animals, as for the population, 10 people were infected. All of them had a laboratory examination, but only two of them, a man and a woman, had a complex form of Siberian Plague. Because of this, they were hospitalized. The others have been discharged, because they had only cutaneous form of the anthrax. All of them are receiving a proper treatment,”_said Aleksandre Turasvhili.

Anthrax is an acute zoonotic infectious disease. The main source of the disease is an infected domestic animal, especially cattle.
