Life in the house destroyed by disaster

August 8, 2015

Lela Khechoshvili, Kakheti

38 year-old disabled Giorgi Iaseshvili lives in the partly destroyed house with his two small children and wife. The building was damaged in 2012 during a natural disaster. Storm and hail broke the roof. Despite the efforts, the family could not receive any help from the local government.  They were not able to repair it by themselves, because they are extremely poor. On July 23, because of heavy rain, high flood that came from the ravine in Akhasheni, flooded the first floor and yard of their house. As Giorgi says, they did not receive any help during any disaster.

“Water rushed into house during the rain, without help of my wife I would probably have drowned, because the water came upon me. My wife was fetching the water with buckets. Nobody helped us, not even soldiers.

As the housewife Bela Iaseshvili says, she has repeatedly addressed the local government for help, but to no avail.
“The governor told me that if my house was damaged by a natural disaster, they would have helped. They should at least roof our house so the children can have a shelter. The house is collapsing and the walls are all wet because of rain. Sometimes rocks and tiles are falling down in the rooms. I have 2 year-old and 12 year-old children. They are depressed. We are so poor that the neighbors bring food to us, who are poor by themselves. Very often, I go to bed hungry, because  I have to feed my children. Sometimes I go for private jobs, but my husband is in pain and he needs to be lift up in every half hour. Nobody helps us from the government. I guess no one is interested in faith of the poor. What can I do, my life is destroyed,”-says Bela Iaseshvili.

As the governor of Gurjaani municipality, Gia gergidze told to humanrights.ge, he had no information about this family and he is going to help them: “Their house was damaged during the natural disaster and nobody helped them? I will take care of this for sure, I did not know about the Iasesvhili family. Thank you for the information,”-said the governor.
