Impeachment Issue Was Cancelled at the Special Session of the City Council

Majority of the Gori City Council members cancelled the issue of impeachment of the city mayor, chairman of the council, his deputy and chairman of the property management commission that was to be discussed during the September 2 special session. Opposition members said the council chairman had scheduled the special session through violation of the regulations. They were discontent with scheduling the session when one of the impeachment supporters Zurab Rosebashvili was on business leave in Norway.

“We cancelled our petition because the special session was scheduled through violation of regulations. We requested to raise the issue of impeachment at the ordinary session on September 4 because Zurab Rosebashvili would have already returned from Norway by that time. They learned that we were missing one important vote and they scheduled the special session in a hurry. We were not ready for that and canceled our request,” said member of the city council Ilia Metreveli.

The city council chairman said he had not breached the regulations by scheduling the special session.

In accordance to the law, 10 votes are necessary in the 15-member city council to declare mistrust to the city mayor and 8 votes to the city council chairman, his deputy and commission chairman.
