US State Department Referred Evaluations by Human Rights Center in Its Annual Report on Human Rights Practices in 2015

April 14, 2016

Today, US State Department published its Annual Country Reports on Human Rights Practices in 2015; the report traditionally reviews the state of human rights in Georgia too.

The Report referred the evaluations and recommendations by Human Rights Center with regard to problems of female and juvenile prisoners.

In accordance to the US State Department’s report, “The NGO Human Rights Center (HRIDC) reported in September that female prisoners did not receive an appropriate quantity of hygienic products in some institutions. Juvenile facilities did not meet international standards for health care and living conditions. The HRIDC also reported that women and juvenile prisoners did not have access to lawyers for legal assistance in preparing various documents, complaints, and statements on early release, and other important matters.”

It is noteworthy that relevant governmental institutions have already taken into account part of recommendations of Human Rights Center and resolved some problems of female and juvenile prisoners. For example, payment for conjugal and video meetings was cancelled and the state supplied the penitentiary establishments with appropriate quantity of hygienic products.

Regardless the positive steps taken by the state institutions, there are still many problems which need to be addressed and Human Rights Center continues advocating those problems before relevant state institutions.
