On December 5, Public Defender of Georgia opened International Human Rights Week in Gori. Ucha Nanuashvili spoke about the state of human rights in the country during the public lecture in the Gori State University. He spoke about the issues related with the implementation of the Law on the Eradication of All Forms of Discrimination. Nanuashvili spoke about gender equality, child’s rights and rights of people with disabilities in his public lecture; he also spoke about the human rights violation facts in the conflict-affected zone, about the needs and problems of IDPs and refugees.

“Today we commence the Human Rights Week; as you know December 10 is the International Human Rights Day; today we start the week with different events, including the one in Gori. The purpose of today’s meeting is to inform students about the state of human rights in the country and about the work of our office. Today, we discussed all major fields where we work,” Ucha Nanuashvili said.

During his conversation with students, Public Defender reviewed the situation in the field of justice, penitentiary system and mentioned those recommendations which his office has proposed to relevant state institutions.

International Human Rights Day is marked on December 10. On December 10, 1948, the UN General Assembly declared that the Universal Declaration on Human Rights was “the common achievement of all peoples and nations.”
