The inhabitants of the villages – Ninotsminda, Giorgitsminda, Patardzeuli and Tokhliauri in Sagarejo municipality are supplied with the drinking water, which is polluted with Streptococus Faecalis and E-coli. Nongovernmental organization Human Rights Center published the alarming results of the laboratory analysis, which was conducted by the laboratory of the G. Natadze Sanitation, Hygiene and Medical Ecology Scientific-Research Institute.

According to the conclusion, the worst situation is in Patardzeuli village. According to the “Drinking Water Technical Regulations”, the E-coli and Faecalis must not be in the drinking water at all.

Based on the received results, the Kakheti regional department of the National Food Agency recommended the Sagarejo municipality mayor to clean-disinfect the water reservoirs in the mentioned villages ASAP and to warn the local population not to drink the water from their taps unless it is boiled.

“Nobody met the locals from the city hall; neither had they provided the people with the information that it was necessary to boil the water before drinking. We met representatives of the city hall and municipal assembly. They could not answer why the recommendations of the NFA were not fulfilled.

The village deputies told us, they were informed about the pollution of the drinking water in their villages and did not use it in their families.

However, they could not answer how many families in their villages managed to purchase the drinking water every day,” deputy executive director of Human Rights Center Nino Tlashadze told reginfo.ge.

Locals said, many families cannot afford to buy water every day and they have to drink the water from the tap.

On February 26, Sagarejo municipality city hall released statement presenting the data from December 2019, January and February 2020 claiming that there is no alarming situation in the mentioned villages.

We asked municipality mayor Giorgi Erbotsonashvili, based on which data they state that the drinking water in the mentioned villages is not polluted. “We have a LEPL here – water laboratory. They tested the water and said that the water is not dangerous for health.”

It is noteworthy that the laboratory of the City Hall used to test the water in the villages in the past too; the laboratory does not have accreditation. Sagarejo municipality city hall does not have the conclusion of the accredited laboratory made for the past three months, which could prove that the drinking water in Ninotsminda, Giorgitsminda, Patardzeuli and Tokhliauri is harmless.

The laboratory of the G. Natadze Sanitation, Hygiene and Medical Ecology Scientific-Research Institute examined the water in Lambalo village too of Sagarejo municipality but they did not detect pollution in it. The sample was taken in the public school of Lambalo village.

Initially, participants of the training organized by Human Rights Center requested to examine the quality of the drinking water in Sagarejo municipality; the participants were from Sagarejo.

According to the city hall, in 2020, they plan rehabilitation of the main reservoirs of the drinking water systems in all five villages.
