Human Rights Center is monitoring the trial of protesters detained during the rallies in Tbilisi

November 6, 2020

Human Rights Center is monitoring the trial of 7 activists detained on November 4 during a rally near the Tbilisi District Election Commission buildings at the Tbilisi City Court.

Nino Tarashvili, Judge of the Administrative Cases Panel of the Tbilisi City Court, examines the case of the activists detained during the protests.

Police arrested all seven protesters under Articles 166 (Disorderly conduct) and 173 (Non-compliance with demand of a law-enforcement officer) under the Administrative Offences Code of Georgia.

At yesterday's court hearing, the judge granted two motions of the defense. One concerned the questioning of witnesses and the other the postponement of the hearing. At the end of the hearing, Judge Nino Tarashvili released all seven detainees from the courtroom. However, the process continues today. Witnesses Khatia Dekanoidze and Beka Papashvili will be interrogated during trial. Furthermore, the attorneys will provide video recordings of the arrest as evidence.

Human Rights Center is monitoring the trial of the civil activists arrested on November 4 as part of the project “Monitoring Public Events”. In addition to this case, the organization monitors 20 other allegedly politically motivated criminal and administrative cases.
The project “Monitoring Public Events” is financially supported by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).
