The Georgian Times Wins the Appeal

The Georgian Times Wins the Appeal

A September 13, 2004 Resolution on rejecting the request for initiating a criminal case against The Georgian Times newspaper reads: "Criminal case against the Georgian Times Ltd shall not be initiated due to absence of any criminal action in their activities. Financial documents shall be returned to the GT administration. No evidence was found supporting the financial misdemeanors and tax dodging allegations by the GT administration".

Almost 3 months ago, on July 14 as the Georgian language GT was preparing its new issue for printing financial police "visited" the editorial office. The fact was evaluated by the giant foreign counterparts of the Georgian journalists as raid who declared solidarity to our newspaper without delay. Three months have passed. The GT financial division worked without some 2 thousand documents taken by the financial police with them while team of journalists worked under psychological pressure and continued waiting for the final conclusion.

The financial police stated they were acting based on the information which said that the GT is everywhere and always and continuously commits misdemeanors, dodges taxes, forges financial documents.

Simultaneously a high-ranking official hysterically claimed that the GT is a haunt for blackmailers and criminals.

For us it was the time of uncompromised struggle for survival and confusion. We are responsible before you, our readers and society in general. So here
we are reporting to you:

A September 13, 2004 Resolution on rejecting the request for initiating a criminal case reads: "Criminal case against the Georgian Times Ltd shall not be initiated due to absence of any criminal action in their activities. Financial documents shall be returned to the GT administration. No evidence was found supporting the financial misdemeanors and tax dodging allegations by the GT
administration".

Financial police and prosecutor's office laid huge efforts to find the truth and make an unbiased decision. They had courage and resolve to say what the GT deserved.
