Microbes in Drinking Water

May 1, 2007

zkalib.gifAdigeni district population drinks polluted water that is full of microbes. The assumptive level of drinking water is identified with the number of 10. While in Adigeni is has reached 460 that is 46 times as much as the norm.

On Monday, the statement about the large amount of microbes in drinking water was made at the meeting in Adigeni Municipality.

“The general level of microbes in drinking water is too high. The norm is ten but the research showed it has reached 460 in drinking water,” said Eliko Tatenashvili, the head of the Labor, Health, Veterans, Refugees and IDP Service Department within the Adigeni Municipality.  She also said that despite the high number of microbes in the water, it is not a pathogenic situation.

“The assumptive norm has risen, however it cannot be considered pathogenic because they are not intestine microbes,” said Tatenashvili. However, she immediately made controversial phrase. “It is urgent situation, we have warned the population to drink only boiled water.”

Despite urgent situation, part of the population does not have information about it. “Although the water is muddy in the tap, we do not know if it is so warning,” said local residents.

“Nobody has ever told me personally to boil drinking water,” said Anzor Chikhradze.

Particularly high is the quantity of microbes in water when it is raining. Sanitary Service Offices have not tested water in the reservoir during rain yet. Thus, they do not know where the water gets polluted or whether the reservoir is safe or not.

“There is a water reservoir, but it does not have any filter. When snow melts, polluted water drains in the reservoir. We are writing a petition to the Prime-Minister because the problem must be immediately resolved. Otherwise, drinking water will cause serious infection diseases in the district,’ said Zurab Chilingarashvili, Governor of the Adigeni Municipality.
