Non Governmental Organization “Saphari” Presents Annual Report

Two days ago union “Saphari” presented one year report of the project “Creation of regional network of victims of domestic violance”.

According to the Chairwoman of the organization Nato Zazashvili, they are working with the victims of domestic violance: “Our main goal is to solve the problem of torture. We work in two main directions – the first direction is working with the victims, that means medical, physiological, juridical and social support and the second – prevent such cases.”

As Nato Zazashvili declares, only one non governmental organization will not be able to solve such a great problem as torture. That’s why, she says that it is necessary to co-operate with the government and media:

“The regional network has been created in the frames of this project this year. On the base of NGO “Atinati”, we based our branch in Zugdidi and besides this we also based the Kakheti branch in Naphareuli. I have to mention, that that work very actively and nowadays, they have quite good results,” says Nato Zazashvili.

According to her, other NGOs send the victims of torture to them and only very little percent of victims come from the streets.

This year union “Saohari” has served 150 victims of domestic violance. Besides the working with the victims they try to connect and to work with the torturers also. As Zazashvili declares, they had a case, when one of the torturers connected with them and asked for their help: “He wanted to control his behaviors,” says Zazashvili.

The organization has its own sanctuary, which was found in 2001. The location of the sanctuary is a secret: “Unfortunately, we have only two rooms and we can give a place only to six victims. That’s why we often say no to a lot of people. The victims stay for a month in the sanctuary and medics and psychologists work with them. But we have an exception: Young mother of three children lives in the sanctuary. We can say that we adopted her and nowadays she learns on nursery and after two years she will get good job with high salary. After that she can take her children from Tskneti children house and they can live together.”

With the help of social workers, “Saphari” tries to discover the opportunities of the victims and after that, they learn concrete handworks and they get their own source of income.

“This fact helps the victim to evaluate her own self-confidence and realize that she herself can earn money. I cannot forget the face of the victim, who after the selling of her handmade got 200 lari and realized that she herself can look after her children,” says Zazashvili.
