The Human Rights Center Organized Demonstration Regarding the International Day for the Protection of the Torture Victims

June 26, 2009

Today, the Human Rights Center organized a demonstration regarding the International Day for the Protection of Torture Victims in Vera Park in Tbilisi. Participants protested the facts of torture that have increased in number for the last three months.

“Most people who were detained during the recent three months became victims of torture,” said Ucha Nanuashvili, executive director of the Center. “The statistics of the last three months completely changed the positive picture of progress of the country in this field during the recent 4 years. Law enforcers consider themselves inviolable that strengthens impunity syndrome among them. In parallel to it, police is politicized that resulted into increasing number of tortured people in detention settings.”

Participants of the action left slogans at the entrance to the park: “Stop Torture!”

After that, representatives of the Human Rights Center and the Center for Rehabilitation of Torture Victims went to Cinema House “Amirani” where they presented the cartoon “Anarekli” and book “My Name Is…” in the Literature Café.
