Lawyer Requests Right To Protect Vakhtang Maisaia

July 17, 2009

Attorney of Vakhtang Maisaia, Natia Korkotadze requests the permission to study the case materials thoroughly. At the press-conference in the Public Defender’s Office the attorney requested to allow her to make copies of the case materials. Natia Korkotadze said that Maisaia does not have any attorney at all and she is acting like a currier.

The lawyer was trying to get access to the case materials for three weeks in vain. Three days ago she succeeded but now she is not allowed to make copy of documents. “I am not allowed to introduce the detainee with the reports of accusation side. Consequently, I cannot hear the comments of Maisia on the accusations against him. I am a lawyer and not military expert so I cannot say whether the materials belong to state secret. I cannot show the materials to any other military expert to hear their comments on the accusations,” said Natia Korkotadze.

Deputy Public Defender Giorgi Chkheidze said that in order to guarantee the complete protection of the detainee the attorney and the detainee should have access to the documents.

Vakhtang Maisaia was arrested for espionage on May 5, 2009. Maisia pleaded guilty that resulted into the detention of two more people Irakli Batkuashvili and Beso Oboladze. Later Maisaia said that he made testimony under psychological oppression. Attorney Natia Korkotadze said she handed the statement of Vakhtang Maisia, officially approved by the director of the detention Setting N 8 to the investigator Lali Zumabdze where the detainee requests repeated interrogation to make impartial and real testimony.

Two-month pretrial detention on Vakhtang Maisaia was prolonged and the case will be sent to the court on August 5.
