Only Politically Acceptable Teachers Must Work at Schools

September 17, 2009

Tako Khutsishvili

Khatuna Enukidze worked at Tbilisi Public School N 76 for seven years. Lately she was fired. As she supposes the reason for her dismissal was her political opinions and relationship with Irina Enukidze, mother of Sandro Girgvliani. (Girgvliani was killed by high-ranking officials of the law enforcement bodies; her mother organized rallies to demand punishment of those officials who participated in the murder of her son; later she died as a result of serious illness).

“I wrote three projects for the Competition of the Ministry of Education “Deer Leap” which were very successful. I wanted to start working on a new project in summer but since I do not have computer at home, I asked director of the school Davit Jaganashvili to let me take one computer at home during the summer; I was to return the computer as soon as school term starts. He did not refuse. Tinatin Kobiashvili, manager of the school who is responsible for technical equipment of the school, did not consider it was necessary to sign the agreement. Then the director told me other teachers also asked him to take computers home for some time and I could take the computer only after everybody was already on holiday.

I really took the computer after the term finished. I had already agreed it with the director and did not ask him permission again. The manager demanded me to bring the computer back,” said Khatuna Enukidze who finally was blamed for having taken the computer from school without permission.

Mimoza Sharashenidze, deputy director of the school, got in touch with Enukidze, blamed her for swindle and demanded to write explanation letter. “She told me it was criminal offense and I was to be grateful for not informing the police about the fact. I returned the computer on the same day. I wrote everything in the explanation letter but the deputy director said the explanation was not detailed and in it I wanted to blame the director for everything. She demanded me to write that I had taken the computer without director’s permission; in this case I would be reprimanded and it will finish within a month.” So, I obeyed her and wrote what she told me. However, I wrote in the letter that manager allowed me to take the computer.

Khatuna Enukidze thinks that the board session, which decided to dismiss her from the school, was organized through violation of the law. “I am member of this board and they did not inform me what the topic of the discussion was. Board members were under uppression during the session. About ten teachers heard the director permitted me to take the computer. Davit Jaganashvili denies this fact now.”

Khatuna Enukidze says the main reason for her dismissal is her political opinions. “I always say that I am in opposition with the ruling party. As a board member I always expressed my opinion about the violations in the school. I made a statement at the rallies in April. Irina Enukidze was my distant relative and I always stood beside her during the protest demonstrations she organized. During the parliamentary elections I met Levan Gachechiladze at our school. Since then, I was persecuted and everybody tried to dismiss me from school.”

Based on the decree issued on September 1, Khatuna Enukidze was fired from school. Now she is unemployed but is not going to give up. “I appealed to the United Trade Union, Ministry of Education, General Inspection for help; I am not going to give up,” said the teacher.

Khatuna Enukidze will sue the school administration in near future.
