Ukrainian Media Outlets Published Audio Recording of Phone-Conversation of Vano Merabishvili and Givi Targamadze

January 20, 2010

Ukrainian media outlet published audio-recording of the phone conversation of Vano Merabishvili, Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia and Givi Targamadze, chairperson of defense and security committee of the parliament of Georgia.

The Georgian conversation of Targamadze and Merabishvili is translated in Russian. They discuss traveling and taking people to the Ukraine from Tbilisi. The minister said that the plane full of passengers is standing in the airport and cannot take off.

Merabishvili ordered Targamadze to control whether director general of the air company “Airzena” Tamaz Gaiashvili hides something from them. In reply Targamadze said he would find out the situation. The MP said that he had general information about the delay but did not know anything about concrete reason. Besides that, they curse Gaiashvili during conversation.

Merabishvili said the situation is worse than if they were refused. The minister asked the MP to call Iulia Timoshenko to find out how “1 000 people shall arrive in the Ukraine/”

Vano Merabishvili said he had added one more flight for the next day and Targamadze would receive more 300 observers. In reply Targamadze said it should be enough and added that he had more 400 people.

“Akhalaia promised to give fighters. I will send them too,” said Merabsihvili. Targamadze replied these people are already in Donetsk. According to Merabishvili, he wanted to send more people but it is technically impossible.

According to the Russian translation of the audio-recording, Merabishvili asked Givi Targamadze to speak with them and warn that they would need planes for the second stage of the elections because they wanted to send 200-300 people and it is difficult to send them by Georgian planes.

“Tell Iulia that unless our planes arrive there, she should send their planes – people are in the airport but cannot fly. Call Iulia immediately and tell that people are sitting in the airport for 2 hours already,” said Merabishvili.

Targamadze replied, he would call Iulia immediately.

In his interview with Interpressnews Givi Targamadze neither denied nor confirmed the fact. He gave vague reply.
