Opposition Parties Discuss Fate of Saakashvili – Death Penalty or Hang Up?

March 2, 2010
Tako Khutsishvili

On February 26, representatives of opposition parties had meeting in Saguramo holiday house of Bidzina Gegidze; part of society assessed the meeting as Last Supper. Koba Davitashvili, Irakli Alasania, Bidzina Gegidze, Kakha Kukava, Zurab Noghaideli, Erosi Kitsmarishvili, Aleko Shalamberidze, Levan Gachechiladze and other representatives of opposition parties attended the meeting.

Besides discussing the common candidate for Tbilisi Mayor, oppositionists raised the question of Saakashvili’s liability.

As we know from the recent history, the first president of Georgia died in obscure circumstances; the second – lives on his state pension in the presidential residency in Krtsanisi under security guarantees. Apparently, opposition leaders decided to discuss the fate of the third president too and seriously discussed his future liability in Gegidze’s holiday house.

Member of the Conservative Party Kakha Kukava did not want to comment on the issue with us because according to him, their meeting in Gegidze’s house was private one.

Leader of the People’s Party Koba Davitashvili does not keep the details of the meeting in secret. He confirmed the information about discussing the liability of the president at their meeting.

“Precedent of Shevardnadze hinders development of fair state. I think, every official shall be equal before the law regardless his/her position – if he commits a crime, he shall be tried under the law,” said Koba Davitashvili.

According to the leader of People’s Party, the liability of the president caused controversy between opposition leaders.

Koba Davitashvili: “Irakli Alasania preferred to maintain stability in our country and give security guarantees to Saakashvili and assure him that he would not be imprisoned in order to encourage him to leave his position peacefully. My position is that Saakashvili shall be tried by the court.”

Member of the Alliance for Georgia and former public defender of Georgia Sozar Subari thinks discussion of Saakashvili’s liability is too early.

Sozar Subari: “Of course, fair court shall judge everybody’s activities but now, when opposition parties have serious challenge as local self-governmental elections, Saakashvili cannot be judged in near future. I think discussing this problem is too unserious. Today, we have to settle more serious and important problems.

Leader of the People’s Party thinks the liability of the president is most important issue for opposition. “We have always discussed Saakashvili’s resignation and about follow-up events after his resignation.”

We kindly remind you that president Saakashvili’s term expires in 2013. Opposition parties plan to renew their protest rallies from April of 2010. The local self-governmental elections are really serious challenge not only for opposition parties but for the government too. In fact, after these elections, the opposition will pass final verdict for Saakashvili – death penalty or hang up.
