NGOs Demand Pre-Term Elections in Adjara

February 3, 2004

NGOs Demand Pre-Term Elections in Adjara

"For the Sunny Future", a movement of NGOs operating in Adjara, began collecting signatures on a petition demanding that the Adjaran parliament be dissolved and that pre-term elections for a new parliament be held in Adjara on March 28.

According to one of the representatives of the movement, Petre Zambakhidze, in addition to an election, the NGOs are also demanding that the state of emergency in Adjara be ended. Three thousand signatures have already been collected on the petition.

If NGOs manage to collect 50,000 signatures, they will be able to legally present the petition to the parliament of Adjara, and demand the repeal of the constitutional amendment added on June 7, 2001, according which the position of the head of Adjara was formed. The NGOs consider the creation of this position to have been illegal.
