Protest for the Defense of Labor Rights

February 5, 2004

Protest for the Defense of Labor Rights

Yesterday, representatives of Trade Unions, the NGO "Green Alternative", and the Young Lawyers Association organized a protest in front of the Marriot hotel, where members of Georgia's elite were celebrating the approval of a financial package for the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline. The protesters' main demand was the defense of workers' labor rights.

Demonstrators claimed that pipeline companies were violating the labor rights of people working on the construction of the pipeline, and demanded that labor rights guaranteed by legislation be enforced. Workers protested both the existing labor treaty and unsuitable working conditions.

After the protest ended, representatives of the company met with several demonstrators, although no agreement was reached.
