Chechen Citizens Have Been Released

February 9, 2004

Chechen Citizens Have Been Released

On Friday, the district court released three Chechens from detention. Russia had been demanding their unconditional extradition from Georgia on charges of terroism. Georgian law enforcement officers had detained them for illegally crossing the Georgian border.

The extradition of these Chechens was among the most popular cases last year. Their case had been discussed during the year by both the district and the Supreme Court. After lengthy consideration, the Supreme Court finally refused to extradite the Chechens. The district court ruled that not enough evidence had been presented to warrant a conviction.
