Mamaladzes Sue Rustavi 2

February 17, 2004

Mamaladzes Sue Rustavi 2

Marika Kavtaradze, wife of ex-governor Levan Marmaladze, stated in a press conference yesterday that the Tbilisi Prosecutor’s Office, together with the Rustavi 2 Broadcasting Company, is trying to discredit the Mamaladzes.

A few days ago, Rustavi 2 made serious accusations when it ran a story on the issue of the Mamaladzes' dachas. Kavtaradze claims that contrary to the televised report, while they do have dachas in Kodjori, they have none in Tsavkisi, nor in Tskneti, nor in Tabakhmela, as Rustavi 2 claimed .

Kavtaradze also refutes charges that she has established an NGO with millions of dollars stolen from the budget by her husband.

“We don’t have anything except for the property that is mentioned in the declaration,” said Kavtaradze. “I will prove the innocence of my family with the  documentation in my possession, and Rustavi 2 will have to prove in court that the dachas shown on television by their station really belong to us. "

Another family, the Zakutovis, are also bringing a law suit against Rustavi 2 for the same report. The televised report accuses the Zakutovis of hiding most of the property belonging to the Mamaladzes.

According to Kavtaradze, the number of her enemies seems to be increasing. She and her husband have recently begun receiving numerous threatening anonymous letters.  Marika kavtaradze claims that the responsibility for the libelous claims against her and her husband lies with the City Prosecutor Valery Grigalashvili and Rustavi 2.
