Aslan Abashidze Resigns

“Georgians, Aslan has run away, Georgia is free”,- president Mikheil Saakashvili addressed the Georgian population with these words. He  informed the people about the resignation of Aslan Abashidze early in the morning. The protests, begun on May 4 in Batumi, ended with a coup d’etat of the government of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara.

Yesterday, protestors held a peaceful demonstration in Freedom Square, Tbilisi in order to support protests in Batumi.

On May 5, the NGO representatives gathered at the Security Council, and organized a demonstration in Tbilisi to support the developments in Adjara. People gathered in Freedom Square with candles and demanded the resignation of Aslan Abashidze, and a peaceful resolution to the conflict . In addition to NGO representatives, “Kmara” activists, and average citizens, several children preached peace with candles and silence .  

News
