Chairman of the Supreme Court of Georgia Resigned

June 15, 2004

Chairman of the Supreme Court of Georgia Resigned

Lado Chanturia, the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Georgia resigned on June 11.  “I think that I have exhausted my capacities for this post. Everything must end sometime,” said Lado Chanturia.  He stated that he wants to assume a more active role in building the Georgian state.
President Saakashvili accepted his resignation and thanked him for his contributions to the judicial system.
The president has made a decision that Lado Chanturia will continue to work as his adviser for legal issues.
Kote Kemularia, the Georgian Ambassador to the Russian Federation, might take over the chairmanship left vacant by Mr. Chanturia's departure. Kote Kemularia enjoys the full support of the government.
Representatives of the right wing opposition think that the Chairman of the Supreme Court should be a neutral person, not a representative of some party.
