July 19, 2004

The Case of Mirtskhulava Taken to the Court

The General Prosecutor’s office has sent the case launched against David Mirtskhulava, the former Minister of Energy to the Mtatsminda-Krtsanisi District Court of Tbilisi. The investigation of the case against the former Minister lasted for 7 months. Mirtskhulava is charged with abuse of power, which considers from 3 to 8 years of imprisonment.  Also, he is charged with participation in a fraudulent scheme (from 5 to 10 years of imprisonment) and appropriation of documents (up to 1 year). According to the verdict, Mirtskhulava participated in the confession of the debt - 6,700,000 USD - to Armenian Energy Companies and transferred this money to the mediator Company. The money did not reach the addressee and Georgia still owes this money to Armenia. Mirtskhulava will not plead guilty and is not going to pay the money that the court demands from him. In response he has brought the case against Georgia to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
