Tbilisi. 11.08.04. Media News.

After some discussion the Defense and Security Committee of the parliament supported President Mikheil Saakahvili’s initiative, which considers amendments to the law on “Military compulsion and military service”.
According to the above-mentioned draft the compulsory military service will last for 12 months. For persons with higher education this period will be reduced from 12 to 6 months.
As stated by Kakhaber Chikovani, an employee of the Security Council Apparatus, at the session of the committee the practice has shown that 3 months intensive training are enough for developing the respective military habits, whilst the remaining 9 months will be used to strengthen the acquired practice.
As for graduates, the knowledge and habits acquired at military chair will be improved at military divisions. At the same time, however, it was mentioned that the matter of keeping military chairs remains yet to be discussed.
According to MP Giga Bokeria, military chairs show no immediate positive results.
MP Ivliane Khaindrava did not support the draft law on “Military compulsion and military service”. According to him, the above-mentioned law does not portray the conclusions of neither law-enforcement nor experts working in this field.
David Kirkitadze, deputy minister of the Defense and Security agrees with the note of Khaindrava. He told Kakha Baratashvili, parliamentary secretary of the president that the mentioned draft law will not be discussed without the mentioned conclusions and recommendations.
