Justice Minister Visited Women Prisoners

August 25, 2004

Justice Minister Visited Women Prisoners

The Georgian Justice Minister visited women prisoners in Tbilisi Jail No. 1 yesterday. The Minister stated that the situation in the jail is terrible with the building sub-standard and called for it not to be functioning any longer.

After visiting the jail, the Justice Minister went to see women’s penitentiary where the new jail is under currently under construction. The new jail for women will be ready around the end of November 2004. It will have a capacity for  110 prisoners, very civilised in its standards with access to a library and a dinning room rather than the prisoners having to take their meals in their cells.

As for the finances for building the new jail, the Minister reported that funds will be allocated for it from the state budget. GEL270 thousand will be spent on its construction from the GEL1.5 million budget of the Georgian Justice Ministry.

The Justice Minister stated as well that the construction of a  new prison “with European standards” will be started in Kutaisi in the next several days.
