Non-Governmental Organisations Demand the Parliament to Establish Inter-Department Commission

Tbilisi. 03.09.04. Media News. The Union of Orthodox Parents held a protest action in front of the State Chancellery objecting to the reform in the educational system of Georgia which is going to be implemented.
The board members of the Union, which was joined by 20 NGOs, declared their mistrust to Mr Aleksandre Lomaia, Minister of Education and Science and his team, and called on Prime Minister, Zurab Zhvania, and Parliamentary Chairperson, Nino Burjanadze, not to discuss and consequently not adopt the “anti-state” and “anti-national” bills. Further to this end participants of the action prepared an appeal to President Mikheil Saakashvili.
“The introduced bills are in absolute contradiction to the educational system which is based on Georgian traditions. The reason is that professional and practical staff no longer participate in the educational field, reform and management of the system” as was stated in the appeal to the President which further included four demands: not to adopt the bills on the “General Education System,” the “National Goals of General Education” and the “Higher School,” to stop the dictatorship of representatives of the NGOs (Institute of Liberty and “Kmara”) in the processes going on in the educational field, to establish an inter-departmental commission which will work on the development of the Georgian education system and, finally, to change the content of the reform.
The participants of the action have threatened to hold permanent protest actions if their demands are not met.
