President Declares Own Decree Void

Tbilisi.31.10.04. Media News. Mikheil Saakashvili, President of Georgia, declared a decree which he himself had signed, as void.

According to the 24 August decree, the new stage in the reforms of judicial system was to begin on September 20. In line with the decree of the Georgian President 70 district courts existing in Georgia had to be reduced to 24. Consequently the number of judges, at present amounting to more than 300, would also be decreased.

What is more, the decree demanded that two or three courts should be fused into one district court following the example of the unification of the district prosecutor’s offices.

This concept of reforming the judicial system and procedural law was developed in the Ministry of Justice, in spite of the fact that the implementation of the concept is not needed any more.
The President of Georgia, considering a request of the Law community, declared the decree issued on August 24 on uniting the District Courts as void.
