Georgian Peace-keepers Left for Iraq

Tbilisi. 08.11.04. Media News. On November 8, two Commando Battalions have left for Iraq from Alekseevka military base of the Interior Ministry of Georgia to contribute to the peace mission in Iraq. Soso Nikolaishvili, head of the military headquarters, will be leading the battalion.

The farewell ceremony started at 8 a.m. Among the participants were the Minister of Security Giorgi Baramidze, the head of general headquarters, Vakhtang Kapanadze, the Secretary of the Security Council Gela Bezhuashvili and the relatives and family members of the soldiers.

“I am proud having seen Georgian soldiers being ready to stand up to the danger they may face in Iraq”,- stated Giorgi Baramidze, Security Minister of Georgia.

In the framework of training and equipment programme the battalions have undergone three months training and one more month special retraining for carrying out peace operations. Before their arrival in Iraq they will stay in Kuwait for two weeks additional trainings.

The mission of Georgian peacekeepers in Iraq has been assigned to patrol populated areas together with US military forces as well as to participate in raids and to detain persons accused of involvement terrorism.

For information: 159 Georgian peacekeepers of rifle battalion are now in Iraq. The number of them is going to increase up to 850 by 2005. The US government will start the new stage of the programme at the 11th base of Vaziani and 21st base of Kutaisi.
