Tbilisi.12.11.04.Media News.Tbilisi is hosting the first International Training-Seminar “Istanbul Protocol”. The seminar, which opened in “Courtyard Marriot” on November 12, is dedicated to the investigation of torture.

Such organizations as “International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims” from Denmark, “Doctors for Human Rights” from the USA and the “Human Rights Foundation” from Turkey are participating in the seminar.

The Georgian NGOs – Human Rights Information and Documentation Centre, Georgian Centre for Rehabilitation of Torture Victims “Empatia”, “Article 42 of the Constitution”  and Georgian Doctors National Independent Association are also actively participating in “Istanbul Protocol”.
International organizations stated at the seminar that the situation regarding torture is very critical in Georgia, a fact which has been reiterated in all international documents dealing with human rights.
Sozar Subaru, Public Defender, admitted at the seminar that his promise to forestall torture has proven more difficult to realise than expected for lack of people to monitor facts of torture.
“At present the Public Defender’s Apparatus does not have the necessary resources but we are looking for ways” – stated the Public Defender.

75 experts, 50 doctors and 25 lawyers form governmental and non-governmental organizations are participating in the training.
