Procedure of Changing Name Simplified

Tbilisi.14.12.04.Media News. Ministry of Justice prepared and introduced to the parliament for discussion amendments to the “Law on Registration of Civil Acts”.

According to the amendments the procedure of changing names of the citizens is much more simplified.

The ground for denying the application of the citizen regarding change of the name can be the wish of the applicant to take as a surname such succession of letters which complicates or even makes it impossible to identify the person and comes into contradiction with internationally acknowledged norms.

Davit Muskhelishvili, Rector of History Institute is against this initiative of Ministry of Justice. He says that “a person cannot become Bagrationi (surname of the Georgian kings) or Orbeliani (surname of Georgian dukes) according to his/her wish. We should have certain limits for that”.
