Prime Minister of Georgia Dies

In the early morning hours of February 3, 2004, the Prime Minister of Georgia was found dead at the rented flat of Deputy Governor of Kvemo Kartli Raul Usupov. Vano Merabishvili, Interior Minister of Georgia, informed the society about the deaths of Zhurab Zhvania and Raul Usupov.

The official cause of death is poisoning by gas;  the gas heater was not fixed properly. According to Vano Merabishvili, the Prime Minister went to the flat of Raul Usupov at about 23:30. Since the visit lasted quite long, Zhvania’s bodyguards unsuccessfully tried to contact with him by phone. After some time, they broke a window and entered the room. They discovered Zurab Zhvania already deceased.

President Michael Saakashvili expressed his condolences regarding the tragedy and stated that the death of the Prime Minister is a hard shock for him as well as for the entire country.
