Interim Commission for Fighting Trafficking Established at the Security Council

Tbilisi.02.14.05.Media News. The Georgian government begins fight against trafficking with approving a two-year action plan for fighting trafficking. On February 14 Non Governmental Organization “Airis Georgia” and US International Development Agency held a presentation of the plan in the hotel “Tbilisi Marriot”.

The action plan was approved by the president’s decree in December 2004 and for the efficient implementation of the plan an Interim Inter-facility Commission for Fighting against Human Trafficking was established at the Georgian National Security Council.

According to Konstantine Korkelia, Deputy Secretary of the Security Council the issue of trafficking is really topical and actual and it is not the problem of only Georgia. The Security Council will coordinate the facilities in fighting for solving the problem.

According to Davit Usupashvili, representative of “Airis Georgia” – organizer of the presentation, Georgia is on a dangerous level in regard with trafficking, namely, it is among the 2nd and 3rd category countries. If the government does not improve the situation in this respect, he said, it may even lose the serious financial support from the USA as the Congress prohibits rendering financial assistance to this type of countries.

As Usupashvili stated raising awareness of the population regarding trafficking is of high significance in fighting against trafficking. The first task of the Action Plan for 2005-2006 is the legal regulation of the issues of labor migration. The parliament is to adopt a law on labor migration in the first quarter of 2005.
