Former Police Official Detained

Tbilisi.31.03.05.Media-News. Marlen Smagini, the former head of Poti Interior Affair’s Department of Criminal Police, has been detained by authorities. Nazi Aronia, the MP, has devoted a briefing to this case, which happened in 2001.
The case regarded 21 year-old Temur Miqia, who was detained by the Poti police on the 14th of July, 2001. Miqia died several hours later in uncertain circumstances after he was taken to the police department.

According to Nazi Aronia, Temur Miqia was healthy man and the story that he jumped from the second floor of the police department is doubtful.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Poti had launched an investigation on the incident but despite their investigative activities, the truth remained unclear. As Nazi Aronia mentioned, Temur Miqia’s mother, Lamzira Miqia, tried for several years to discover the truth, but in vain.

In November 2004 Lamzira Migia appealed to the new government to help reveal the circumstances surrounding her son’s death. The Prosecution expressed its interest in the case and Marlen Smagini was subsequently detained, as he was responsible for overseeing the pre-detention process.  Murtaz Migineishvili, a Poti police officer, was also detained after going to the police department and confessing that he took part in the activities which led to the death of Temur Migia.

Nazi Aronia thanked the Tbilisi Prosecution Office for their interest regarding the case.
