Supreme Court To Only Have Function of Cassation

Supreme Court To Only Have Function of Cassation

Tbilisi. 01.04.05. Media News. The project of designing reforms for the Supreme, Regional and District courts has been completed at the Supreme Court of Georgia and Supreme Council of the Justice.

According to Kote Kublashvili, the chairman of the Supreme Court, the project calls for broadening the district courts.  15-16 regional courts will be established, while only one judge will be left in each district court to try only less difficult cases.

At the same time judges will be specialized. Groups of judges will be created which will rule on only civil, administrative or criminal cases.

“The judges used to preside over different types of cases, but the project will change this system,” Kiblashvili mentioned.

Kublashvili also stated that the Supreme Court will only have the function of cassation, ruling on appeals, and will no longer discuss serious criminal cases.

The new examination for judges will be organized in June, on which the president has already issued a declaration. According to Kublashvili, the examinations will help in attracting new candidates in the judiciary system.
