Public Defender Opposes Minister of Finance

Tbilisi.21.04.05. Media News. Public Defender Sozar Subar, who delivered his annual report to the Parliament of Georgia today, questioned the responsibility of the Minister of Finance, Valeri Chechelashvili.

The Public Defender’s indignation has been caused by a letter that the Minister of Finance sent to invalids who are on a hunger strike as a sign of protest in front of the Public Defender’s Office. The invalids have demanded 600 000 lari which the government is supposed to pay to them according to a decision made by the Georgian Supreme Court. The Minister of Finance indicated in his letter that the allocation of these funds is irrelevant until the criminal case launched against the Invalids League is finished.

According to Subar, the Minister does not have a right to discuss the expediency of the Supreme Court’s decision, and that putting this decision into practice is obligatory.
