Residents of Two Svaneti Villages on the Brink of Starvation

Tbilisi. 15.05.05. MediaNews. According to the information provided by Victor Japaridze, majoritarian MP of the Mestia region, residents of two villages – Ushguli and Adishi-- are on the brink of starvation. After the recent flooding these villages are left without any connection to the outer world, and the MP demands that the Government provide helicopters in order to take food to the villages.

According to Japaridze, the exact damage done to this region is not yet established. Moreover, he doubts that there is anyone in the region with the capacity to make an accurate record of the damage. He has asked the government to send a competent committee to the region to complete this task.

"In the Mestia region about 10 families are left homeless, while the number of families whose houses are filled with water and sand, thus making these houses uninhabitable, far exceeds this number,"- says the MP.  He adds that the government has not provided any real assistance so far. Furthermore, the widow and two underage children of a man who died during last year’s flood are still homeless. The families of people who suffered from this year’s flood are currently being sheltered by relatives and neighbours.
