Discussion to be Held on Creating Monitoring Mechanisms in Georgian Prisons

Tbilisi.16.05.05. Media News. The nongovernmental organization Penal Reform International will hold a conference on the 18th of May at the Sheraton Metekhi Palace.  The conference will focus on the ratification of additional Protocol of the UN Convention for the Prevention of Torture, and the establishment of a national monitoring mechanism in Georgia.

The UN Protocol envisions the creation of social monitoring mechanisms for preventing torture and human rights violations at detention facilities.

Representatives of governmental, nongovernmental and international organizations as well as members of Parliament will attend this conference.

Mathew Fringle, expert from the UN Committee for the Prevention of Torture, will present a special report at the conference. He will speak about the importance of ratifying the additional Protocol.

Penal Reform International is an international organization which has been working in the Caucasus since 2000, focusing on the improvement of prisoners’ and officers’ rights within the penal system.
