Giorgi Khaindrava Pushes for Human Rights Office in Gali

Tbilisi.24.05.05.MediaNews. “Incidents of Georgian civilians being abducted in Gali regions with the aim of extracting money from family members have increased lately,” says Giorgi Khaindrava, Minister of Conflict Negotiation.  “These incidents aggravate the extreme tension of the situation in the region and impede constructive dialogue and the rebuilding of trust between the Georgian and Abkhaz people.  Keeping up the peace process, and all of this is within Georgian as well as Abkhaz interests.”

Giorgi Khaindrava sent an official letter on this issue to the special envoy of the UN General Secretary, the group of fellow countries of the UN Secretary General, and to the UNHCR.

In his address the Minister highlighted that a constructive international politics component should be added to the peacemaking process, and that a human rights office should be opened in Gali, which will contribute to the improvement of the situation not only in Gali, but in the rest of the region as well.

The State Minister expressed his hope that international organizations will pay more interest to these types of incidents and will encourage creating more secure and better living conditions for the civilian population of the Gali region.
