Two Convicts Imprisoned in Abkhazian Jail Brings Suit before the European Counrt of Human Rights against Georgian Government

Tbilisi. 22.06.05 Media News. At the press conference the first deputy Justice Minister Konstantine Korkelia talked about the results of the delegation visit in the European Court of Human Rights of the Council of Europe. He stated that at the meeting with Terry Davis the parties discussed the issue of ratifying the three international conventions, such as Framework Convention on the Defense of National Minorities, European Charter on the Regional and Minority Languages as well as Renewed Social Charter.

According to Korkelia, Georgia asked the CoE for the help of experts in improving the Georgian legislation to harmonize it with the International Acts.
The meeting was focused on the improvement of human rights situation on the local level.

The dealt with extending the functions of the functions of the Georgian representative. The firs deputy minister said that the function of providing the information on the situation of Human Rights defense in Georgia was added to the representation.

Korkelia mentioned that the matter concerning the human right situation in Abkhazia was discussed during the meeting with Luscious Wildhaber, the chairman of the European Court of Human Rights. Georgia asked the Council of Europe to assist in this matter to somehow restate the rights of prisoners.

Nanava and Mamasakhlisi, imprisoned in jail of Abkhazia appealed to the European Court of Human Rights against Georgia. The matter of their admissibility is being discussed in Strasburg.
