Sagarejo Population Demands Oil Company Canargo-Georgia’s Problems Be Solved Immediately
Sagarejo, June 24, 2005. MediaNews. The populations of Ninotsminda and Tskarostavi, villages in the Sagarejo region, have led a protest. After oil gushed out of a borehole on September 10, 2004, these populations say that they have experienced serious health problems and problems with potable water. They are now demanding that the British Oil Company Canargo-Georgia correct these problems.
Gio Itonishvili, Deputy Director of Canargo-Georgia, attended a negotiation with representatives of the protest.
Gia Itonishvili, in an interview with MediaNews, said that Canargo-Georgia is doing everything it can to ease the burden of problems for the population. For the time being the villagers are being provided with water tankers since the usual water supply is being tested for use. As for the deterioration of the health in the populations, Itonishvili claims the problem is not serious. Nevertheless, he said Canargo-Georgia has acquired policies and distributed them among the village population.
According to information provided by Gary Bukhnikashvili, gamgebeli (administrative head) of the Sagarejo region, if the water sources are not polluted, then the population will be provided with drinkable water.
“As for the deterioration of health in the Tskarostavi and Ninotsminda populations, the only thing I can say is that with “Aldagi” policies, they can undergo a free medical examination in Sagarejo regional polyclinics; however, no serious illnesses will be discovered,” the gamgebeli told MediaNews.
