Chechen Refugees Ready for Registration

"Media News". A group of Chechen refugees, which initially refused to register, has now agreed to pass the necessary procedure. Earlier, a part of the Chechen refugees created the Coordination Council, a body which aims at providing them with a possibility to be transferred to a third country.

The Minister of Refugees and Placement, Eter Astemirova, has held  meetings in the Pankisi region and Tbilisi with Ziaudin Idigov, head of the Coordination Council. During these, both sides agreed to start the registration procedure.

The Coordination Council tried to show the international community that they are not secure even while residing in another country. The Russian government has often threatened to conduct military operations in those areas that are inhabited by Chechen refugees.

The second registration round of Chechen refugees started on the 30th of August, implemented on behalf of the Ministry of Refugees and Placement of Georgia and with the financial support of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. At the moment, 2800 Chechen refugees have been registered on the territory of Georgia.
