The Organizers of the Protest Arrested

16/09/05 “GHN”- The main road connecting Georgia to Azerbaijan was closed in the village Vakhtangisi. 30 inhabitants of Kvemo Kartli demanded the creation of the Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. As the protesters say none of their demands were heard by the Georgian government, they set out to make their future in the borders of the Autonomous Republic. The authors of the proclamation, spread on the 5th of September, demanded double citizenship for Azeri people, to start working on a new land reform, to cancel the fees on the borders and to employee Azeri people at state offices.

The organizer of the demonstration was Telman Gasanov. He worked as the deputy of the chief of the Gardabani Region. Gasanov says that none of the international or state organizations are supporting him.

The main part of the Azeri say that they are not supporting Gasanov’s ideas either and that he does not have the right to speak in their name.

The demonstration was dispersed soon after it started. The police arrested Gasanov and his companions.
