Lawyer Complains against Shota Kopadze

26/10/05, “Media News” – The Constitutional Rights Defense Centre has brought a complaint against the chief of the Penitentiary Department Shota Kopadze for disregarding his obligations and for being responsible for the illegal detention of one of the Center’s lawyers.

According to lawyer Alexander Shoshikelashvili, a citizen named Gulo Otarashvili asked him for help. She said that her children, David and Valerie Otarashvili, were illegally retained in the Republican Jail Hospital.

Shoshikelashvili went to visit the prisoners in the hospital on the 25th of October, but they were moved to the Tbilisi №1 Prison. Usually people are moved to this jail after court procedure is over. The final verdict for the two brothers though, was not yet rendered.

Shoshikelashvili tried to visit the prisoners in jail, but he was not allowed to do so.

“Suddenly I saw the chief of the Penitential Department Shota Kopadze in the corridor. I explained my situation to him and asked for help. However, he started to swear against me. I told him to calm down and to behave himself. He, on the other hand, became even more nervous and ordered the guard to lock me up in the building,”- said Shoshikelashvili.

He was freed after 40-45 minutes with the help of his colleagues and members of the Ombudsman’s Office.

Aleksy Shoshikashvili has already sent a complaint to the General Prosecutor’s Office and the Ministry of Justice to investigate the case.
