Imereti Governor Broke Journalist Irakli Imnaishvili's Nose

The mutual verbal insults that journalist Irakli Imnashvili and Imereti Governor Akaki Bobokhidze addressed to each other during Kutaisi-based TV company "Rioni's" live talk show later resulted in physical confrontation between those two persons.

The incident took place on December 1. According to the eyewitnesses, during the fist-fight that took place in the TV company's corridor the Governor broke the journalist's nose. As TV company "Rioni's" Director Tamila Ghvinianidze said, the topic of the talk show was freedom of speech. However, the show was stopped because the outraged Governor left the studio in the middle of the TV program. During the TV debates Irakli Imnaishvili accused the authorities of limiting the freedom of speech.

Later, Imereti region's Governor Akaki Bobokhidze wrote a letter of resignation. Bobkhidze made the corresponding statement at the special briefing in the State Chancellery held on December 2.

Bobokhidze said: "I made two correct decisions, first when I defended my and my family's dignity and then when I decided to resign".

According to the present Georgian legislation, Georgian President appoints and sacks the governors.

So far it is unknown whether the President accepted Bobokhidze's resignation. Imnaishvili is a former journalist of TV company "Mze". He conducted talk show "Archevanis Zghvarze" (at the brink of making a choice). A few months ago the program was closed. Imnaishvili said many times that his program was closed down for the criticism of the authorities.
