Ombudsman Visited Inmates in Kutaisi Jail

26.12.2005, “Media News” – The new jail in Kutaisi was visited by the Public Defender Sozar Subari.

According to him, one inmate was killed during a riot in the prison several days ago. After this strike 12 prisoners were taken to the jail hospital, while others with slight injuries were left in jail.

“12 prisoners are treated in the jail hospital now, but I have to admit, that the injuries are not very serious. When a man is killed, investigation must be started to find out how adequate the use of force was. During a prison riot, the state has a right and moreover duty to reply with the use of force,”- said Sozar Subari.

After transfer to the new Kutaisi jail the riot broke out. Inmates resisted the security forces.

It is silent in Kutaisi prison now.
