Khizri Aldamov: Chechens from Pankisi Gorge Did Not Return to Home Country

08.01.2006, “Media News” - Khizri Aldamov, the head of the Union of Chechen Refugees, stated that the campaign, the returning 70 refugees to Chechnya, never occured.

Khizri Aldamov stated, “Chechens are not returning to their home countries and those who really returned to Chechnya were the inhabitants of Itonkhale region. They cross the border between Chechnya and Georgia quite often, because they have relatives in both countries. They agreed to move to Chechnya because Russians promised to pay them a good amount of money as compensation. But the campaign is not true – I have never seen a citizen of Chechnya whose demands were met.”
He added that the position of Georgian government is quite clear; being that it keeps neutrality in this situation.

Representatives of the Ministry of Urgent Situations of Russia were in the region of the Pankisi Gorge for over 2 weeks monitoring the situation of the Itonkhale peoples. Following held activities, more then 70 people returned to Itonkhale region from Pankisi. Most of the returned refugees were not Chechens. The Georgian side was not officially informed of this visit.
