Protest in Support of Judges in Kakheti

8 January 2006 - Representatives of the media and NGO sector in Kakheti held a protest in support of judges. They demanded cancellation of attempted removal of judges Gvenetadze, Turava, and Isaev from the state. The participants of the protest contacted the MPs in Kakheti. Protesters stated that if their demands are not met, they will declare resistance to the politicians.

The sentence was passed over the weekend in the late hours of the night, which the protest’s organizers believe was a violation of human rights.

The chief of the Lawyer’s Development Center, Tinatin Pkhovelishvili, stated, “Our demands are that the attempted chase of Gvenetadze, Isaev, and Turava from the government be ended. The justice system after the Rose Revolution is a weak and slave justice. We no longer have hope of Georgian justice. If some judges try to state the truth, they may be placed in worse situations than the current ones of Gvenetadze, Turava, and Isaev.”

Among the protesters were students, media, NGO representatives, lawyers working in Kakheti region, and members of Parliament. Lia Khuroshvili, a lawyer of the Human Right’s Center; Gujaani Branch, stated, “We demand that politicians defend the rights of the judges. We demand it because they are elected by us. We understand that it might be difficult to resist Bokeria, Nadiradze, Kalandadze, and Gvaramia, but we demand an attempt from them.”

The protest in Gurjaani, Kakheti was organized by 15 non-governmental and media organizations.
