From September Inmates Will Be Treated in Public Hospitals

17.01.06, Tbilisi, “Media News” – The Minister of Justice Gia Kavtaradze and the Minister of Health, Labor and Social Affairs Lado Chipashvili signed a joint document on the transfer of the penitentiary  medical departments to the responsibility of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Affairs.

According to Chipashvili, the transformation process will be finished before September 2006. Sick prisoners will be treated in public hospitals as all others. The Ministry of Justice will only be responsible for guarding the prisoners.

During the transition period, a special committee will be established, which will be controlled by representatives of both Ministries. 37 doctors of 17 specialities will be members of the committee.
