Gurjaani Police Disperses Children Throwing Snowballs with Clubs

On January 26, 2006, at 16.30p.m., children and adults throwing snowballs in front of the Gurjaani administration building were severely beaten and dispersed by the regional police after warning them to stop their game.

Police officers while physically assaulting the children ripped their clothes and severely battered several adults with clubs. One person was hit on the head and lost his consciousness for a while.

Youngsters who were taken to the police department by force managed to escape from the violent police officers not far from the police department.

Beso Shaishmelashvili, Gurjaani police investigator assaulted the journalist who saw the illegal acts committed by him. After Aleksandre Sirbilashvili’s interference, the situation calmed down.

It should be mentioned that Beso Shaishmelashvili was noticed in similar illegal acts before but no one has put him responsible for them.

Archil Bozhadze refuses to comment the case saying that he was not informed about it, though police officers claim it was his order to disperse the children.
