Kakhetians: Dismiss the Minister of Interior or We Will Make Further Protests

Yesterday, non-governmental organizations, journalists, students, teachers and politicians organized a protest in Gurjaani. The demonstrators demand the punishment of the people who murdered Sandro Girgvliani, 28, and the dismissal of the Minister of Interior.

“The aim of the demonstration is to remind the government, who came to power with empty words, that killing its citizens is a violation of the law. We demand the dismissal of high-ranking officials involved or connected to the assassination of the citizens.” declared the lawyer of the Human Rights Information and Documentation Centre, Lia Khuroshvili and the head of the Georgian Young Lawyer’s Association (GYLA) Telavi branch Lela Taliuri.

Later the parents and family members of trafficking victims and assassinated citizens joined the protest. According to the mother of Akaki Korkotashvili, her son was killed by police officers last year. “The former head of the Gurjaani Police Department, Gela Batsashvili, killed my unarmed son. I have an eye-witness to the incident, who can describe everything in Court. I am sure the murder of my son was preplanned. I have been to every possible body, but no one helped me,” declares Mzia Korkotashvili.

The end of the protest coincided with public demands published last week. “We demand the punishment of the murders of Sandro Girgvliani and every person who is connected with this barbarous act. If the guilty are not punished within the next few days, we will demand the dismissal of the Minister of Interior and organize massive demonstrations in Kakheti”, say the organizers of the protest.
